Cyprus

The third largest island in the Mediterranean, Cyprus streaches 240km from the west to its easternmost tip, and 96km from North to South. Its strategic location acts as a stepping stone to the continents Europe, Africa, and Asia.
With over 9000 years of history, Cyprus has been invaded and claimed by a fascinating mixture of civilisations, all which have left their culture and shaped its character. With archeological findings from the Neolithic Age, the Ancient Greeks and the Roman period, the sites are overwhealming. Churches and monasteries still stand from Byzantine times; castles and palaces from the days of Crusaders and Frankish Lusignans, and splendid city walls from Venetian days.
Cyprus's landscape is one of infinate contrasts and beauty. From its fertile central plain to the cool foothills; the majesty of the cedar valley in which wild indigenous moufflon roam; mile after mile of sandy shores with secluded beaches to seek out, and the hundreds of villages to explore, each with its own tradition and charm. The sunny climate shines through the warm and hospitable people giving visitors a genuine welcome and unforgetable experience.
Larnaca; The Town of St. Lazarus

On the edge of Larnaca Bay the palm-lined seafront of Larnaca town has many cafes, taverns, shops, bars and discotheques. Larnacais an excellent base from which to get to know Cyprus, and its proximity to the International Airport make this a popular holiday choice.
With a population of 53,000, Larnaca has managed to maintain a relaxed and leisurely atmosphere. The ancient Fort houses a small museum, and there is an interesting local archeological museum as well as the impressive house turned museum of the Pierides family, whose own superb collection of heirlooms and histroc items are on display. Also of interest is the church of Ayia Phaneroment, built over a rock cave dating from the 8th century, and the 18th century aquaduct on the outskirts of Larnaca.
Larnaca was the second home of St. Lazarus, who arrived there after his resurrection and later became the first Bishop. The church of St. Lazarus standing in the center of town is well worth a visit. The tomb of St. Lazarus, who is still patron saint of Larnaca, is under the sanctuary.
Out towards the sea on the airport side of town is a beautiful salt lake, which accomodates colonies of flamingos and other migratory birds during winter. In the summer the water evaporates leaving vast salt deposits. Lush gardens on the edge of this lake make a tranquil setting for the Tekke of Hala Sultan, built in memory of the Prophet Mohammed's aunt, who is said to have died at the spot. Also in the area is the church of Panayia Angeloktisti, which literally means "Built by Angels", and in this church the 6th Century life-size Byzantine mosaic of the Virgin Mary is recognised as one of the finest examples of mosaic art on the island.
